A number of respondents were aware of health hubs at auction mart sites and had used them. However, this awareness was not universal. Some auction mart operators were unaware that other auction marts offered primary healthcare. In addition, one respondent had never used an auction mart’s health care facilities. However, other respondents said that the auction mart’s health care services were not very convenient.
The introduction of nurse practitioners in auction marts has provided an opportunity for rural farmers to get health care services close to home. Often, farmers are unable to access a doctor. As a result, work-based care may be necessary. In addition, barriers between primary healthcare providers and farmers must be broken down to deliver services effectively.
The study also investigated the social role of auction marts in rural communities in the UK. It used a qualitative approach, which included interviews with auction mart employees, farmers and farmer support organizations. The research team interviewed ninety respondents, ranging in age from twenty-five to eighty-three. Of these, 14% were women. In addition to interviewing farmers, the researchers collected data from other sources, including newspaper articles and websites.
In the 1920s, Van Tassell & Kearney auction marts were involved in automobile sales. Later, the building housed a candy factory and the Delehanty Institute, a training institute for women in the defense industry. In 1978, it was purchased by Frank Stella, who used the building as his studio. Today, this former auction mart is significant because of its architectural design and the fact that it recalls an era when horses were sold at auction.
Located on the south side of East 13th Street, Van Tassell & Kearney auction mart is a three-story Beaux-Arts style building. The exterior of the building is fifty feet wide and three stories high and is topped by a rounded cornice. The interior has a 65-foot-by-197-foot rink where horses would parade before the public. However, the horse auction business soon declined with the rise of mass-produced automobiles.
After the introduction of the Model T in 1908, horse auctions began to decline in popularity. In addition, horse racing was temporarily banned in New York State, and the American Horse Exchange closed. During this period, the 13th Street auction mart was a part of the Ontario property owned by Sir Adam Beck. It also contained nine horses owned by A. J. A. Devereux.
